Gary Sargeant, our Managing Director recently sat down to share a bit about his role at TSR Select, the work he does, and what he enjoys doing in his time away from work.
1. What is your job role?
In what seems a new and exciting time commercially, my job is to strategically direct the company; automate work processes; ensure all staff receive the correct mentoring, coaching, and training; and look for new potential TSR employees.
2. What is your previous work experience?
Trainee accountant, insurance sales, working in the Middle East selling building materials (but not sand to Arabs), as well as selling advertising UK-wide and telecoms services in the City. That was my last job before setting up TSR. As you can see, I never worked for another recruitment company.
3. What interested you in IT recruiting?
I enjoy IT recruiting because technology never sleeps - it is always evolving and advancing. It is also a big, highly paid market that appreciates and values recruitment and recruiters.
4. How do you help clients and candidates?
We only operate in certain key areas of IT. We are very strong in the Managed Service, IT security, and Cloud Computing spaces. We have excellent knowledge of salaries, work practices, and how these sectors work. We have an extensive database of clients, contacts, and candidates that enables us to quickly provide first class solutions in these areas. We always aim to offer a friendly, helpful service and we try to stay connected to both clients and candidates in the longer term. It is not just about today.
5. What does your typical day look like?
There is never a typical day for me! But I tend to focus my work on more proactive items in the mornings and problem solving in the afternoons. At 9:15 am we have a daily check in so I try to attend that to see what is happening that day.

6. What do you like most about your job?
I really enjoy when I can help a good company and a really nice, qualified candidate get together. I love when you help a person get a great outcome whether that be a client or a candidate. Plus, it is very enjoyable to see people join TSR, enjoy their work, and become successful IT recruitment consultants.
7. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
There is not much time outside of work for any business owner. But I spend the limited free time that I have on football, golf, and meeting up with family and friends. I also enjoy listening to business orientated podcasts when I walk our dog, Alfie. My favourite podcasts include How I Built This by Guy Razz and WTF with Marc Maron.
8. Can you share one fun fact about you or your career?
My first boss felt compelled to let me go from my position as a Trainee Cost Accountant. I remember him saying, "you're a nice guy Gary, but you talk too much and you can't add up so I don't think accountancy is really the career for you." He was 100% correct and when I founded TSR, I found my niche and the ideal role for me.
